Many patrons sought during the 1420s sought to commission work from Fra Angelico.  In 1429, the penitential confraternity of San Francesco, which met in the cloister of Santa Croce, paid Fra Angelico ('frate Guido') for its altarpiece.

This triptych, often called the Compagnia di San Francesco Altarpiece, was commissioned for the convent of Santa Croce, Florence, in about 1429.

The Certosa del Galuzzo Altarpiece was commissioned by the Compagnia di San Francesco for the [convent?] of Santa Croce in Florence.   It therefore sometimes called the Compagnia di San Francesco Altarpiece.   (Note: Fra Angelico painted a second Franciscan altarpiece, the Bosco ai Frati Altarpiece, approximately twenty years later.)

The altarpiece was cut apart at some point in its history.  The central and side panels are all in the Museo di San Marco, Florence.  The five predella panels, however, are dispersed among three European collections, with one panel in Altenburg, Germany; one in Rome; and three in Berlin, Berlin.
